February

It is the shortest month and the only month with fewer than 30 days. The month has 28 days in common years and 29 days in leap years. Also known as "Hunter's Month". February was named after the Latin term februum, which means purification, via the purification ritual Februa held on February 15 (full moon) in the old lunar Roman calendar, but now, having only 28 days in common years, it is the only month of the year that can pass without a single full moon.

The zodiac signs for February are Aquarius or Pisces, depending on the day you were born. The birthstone is amethyst, and the flower either primrose or viola.

The word Amethyst in Ancient Greek means not intoxicated, and the common belief was that the stone would protect its owner from drunkenness. As a result, many goblets were made from the purple quartz.  In Greek mythology, Dionysus, the god of intoxication, and of wine, was pursuing a maiden named Amethystos, who refused his affections. Amethystos prayed to the gods to remain chaste, a prayer which the goddess Artemis answered, transforming her into a white stone. Humbled by Amethystos's desire to remain chaste, Dionysus poured wine over the stone as an offering, dyeing the crystals purple.

It was also worn by medieval European soldiers at amulet as a protection in battle. The stone is also believed to heal and keep people level-headed.

Violets and primroses will bloom in very cold weather. Their fragile but bright petals in the snow signify the coming of spring and heralding hope, inspiration, courage and promise. Their perfumes promise love, devotion and fertility. They are associated with the fairie realms and often are a landmark or gateway into the fairie lands.
